It is common to hear people talking about ‘quality of music’. This is how we end up with certain pieces of music being referred to as being of high quality. And this is also how we end up with certain pieces of music being referred to as being of low quality. Most of the people who talk of music in this way don’t have an objective way of grading the music for quality. They just listen to pieces of music, and then proceed to subjectively grade the music as either being of ‘high quality’ or ‘low quality’.
If we were to make an attempt at developing an objective criterion for grading music, we’d end up having to look at several factors.
While trying to grade music for quality, we’d have to look at the lyrics. There are pieces of music that are pathetic in all other respects, yet they are still well-loved on account of the lyrics.
While trying to grade music for quality, we’d also have to look at the melodies. It is because of excellent melodies that we occasionally see folks who can’t sing in any international language nonetheless proceeding to have international music careers. People just love the ‘sound’ of the music, even if, try as they may, they simply can’t understand a word of what is being sung! For if the melodies are excellent, the lyrics may be overlooked.
Further on, while trying to grade music for quality, we’d have to look at the instrumental components.
Finally, if the music has video, we’d also have to look at that too, in order to determine the overall quality of the music. This has become an important consideration nowadays.
Then having figured out where to place the music on the quality scale, we can, among other things, make up our minds on whether to invest in such music or not. If the music turns out to be of particularly high quality, we may even be persuaded to recommend it to our friends. This element of recommending the music can (nowadays) just be a question of going to one’s SBCglobal login page – that is, assuming you use the Sbcglobal.net email system, and sending a message to the friend in question with the music recommendation. Alongside the recommendation, you may also be tempted to send a link to a site where the friend in question can actually buy the music. But that can be risky: as the friend to whom you have send the recommendation in that way may misinterpret the whole thing. The friend may assume that you are trying to get him or her to buy the music so that you can earn a commission.
